RC44s get a reboot with Osprey Technical

13/07/2016

Ahead of this week’s Portsmouth Cup the fleet of eight RC44’s went through a substantial refit of their on board instrumentation systems with marine electronic specialists Osprey Technical.

Upgrading from the H3000 to the H5000 system with B&G instruments, Rachel Oliver and her team not only installed the hardware on site at Premier Endeavour Quay, but spent three days out on the water with the teams helping them get to grips with the new system.

“What we have installed is a direct equivalent replacement system but with all the latest kit; It’s a completely one design program with a custom one piece wiring harness. Once installed we spent a couple of days teaching the guys how to use the kit and went out on the water with them running through calibrations,” Rachel explained. “The advantage of the new system is it’s much easier to use; the menu structures are much simpler, processing speeds much faster and some great additional features. You don’t need to be an engineer to understand it so hopefully it will make the technology a bit more accessible for the guys out on the water.”

Osprey Technical specialise in Electronics System Delivery, offering system specification, design, supply & installation of complete packages covering all requirements from power through to software.

As for the advantages the teams experience onboard, it may take a little time before they feel the full benefit as Rodney Ardern, trimmer for Artemis Racing Youth, explained: “The new system is easier for sure but it’s still a bit of a mind bender. It has been great to have Rachel and the team out on the water with us to take us through the set up. The challenge now is who can master the brain bending conundrums on how to use it to its full potential before the next team.”
